Windows Vista Theme For Windows XP

Windows Vista Theme For Windows XP

One of the more visible changes of the Windows Vista operating system was the Windows Vista Sidebar which made it possible to put so called gadgets on the Windows.Gadgets are small applications that can display all kinds of information such as RSS news feeds, contacts or system information.

Many Windows Vista users like the Windows Sidebar, others feel that it is to restricted to one part of the screen. Microsoft has already announced that they will change that behavior in Windows 7 so that users can place gadgets wherever they want on the desktop.

It was only a matter of time until someone would port the Windows Vista Sidebar to Windows XP. Joshoon managed to port the real Windows Sidebar to Windows XP by making use of Alky For application. You might remember Alky from the time when Windows Vista came out. That was at the same time when Microsoft announced Vista only applications and Alky was supposed to make them compatible with Windows XP (like the games Shadowrun or Halo 2)

The pack includes three different applications that are needed to install, display and maintain the Windows Vista Sidebar in Windows XP. First there is Alky For Applications which can simply be installed. Once that is done the Windows Vista Sidebar can be installed and will be operational afterwards. The pack comes with many gadgets and a tool called Gadget Gallery which can be used to add new gadgets to the sidebar.
Already available gadgets can be added by right-clicking the sidebar and selecting a gadget from the list of installed gadgets. Each gadget can be added by right-clicking it and selecting Add from the context menu.

Even more interesting than this is the ability to download gadgets from the Windows Vista Gallery site over at Microsoft. It requires some manual work but it’s easily done and works perfectly fine. The gadget needs to be downloaded and unpacked. It comes with the .gadget extension but it can easily be unpacked by most unpackers. Worked fine with 7-zip.

The directory that will be created by unpacking the .gadget file, adding the .gadget extension to the root directory of it and moving it to the Shared Gadgets directory of the sidebar application.
One interesting feature is the ability to detach a gadget from the sidebar so that it can be moved freely around on the desktop.
The Sidebar requires roughly 20 Megabytes of computer memory when displaying the default three gadgets.

It's shockingly easy to create your own icons using Windows XP... Let's do it!

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Paint

On the Image menu, click Attributes

Type 32 for both the Width and Height of the document, and make sure that Pixels is selected under Units

Click OK to create a new 32x32-pixel document: the size of an icon

Now add type, color, or do whatever you'd like to your image.

I like to shrink photos (headshots work great) to 32x32 and simply paste them into my Paint document.

When you're finished, open the File menu and click Save As.

    [Hidden] Internet Browser in XP
Ever been on PC where Internet Explorer was blocked? One solution would be to use a portable version of Firefox on a USB drive, or you can access a hidden browser in Microsoft HTML Help program if removable media is not an option. This was tested on Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7.
Open calculator. You can do this quickly with Windows button+R on your keyboard, type calc in the run box, click OK.

In Microsoft Calculator go to Help -> Help Topics.

Now right click on the left hand side of the title bar and click on Jump To URL...

Type in the URL including the ‘http://’

and off you go. Repeat to visit other sites.

Essentially this is Internet Explorer embedded inside of the HTML Help application. Adobe Flash isn’t working in my hidden browser, but a quick visit to Adobe took care of it.

    Your Ad Here

Suppose you have multiple copies of Windows XP installed in your PC in different drives or installed Windows XP on top of another operating system like Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Now, though you may have removed some or all of the older versions, still the boot screen continues to show the old operating system entries. Isn't it annoying and confusing to remember and select every time the only right option? Don't worry, here is how you can get rid of the problem forever:

    1. Load windows and login if required
    2. Go to Start menu, click on Run and then type cmd. This open up the command window.
    3. Type this command:
    bootcfg /delete /id x
where x is the number of the option you want to delete. Say, for example, you want to delete 2nd boot option then you will type bootcfg
    /delete /id 2 and so on.
    4. Now reboot the machine to check that you have only the correct option(s) available.

Read more at Mike Ormond’s blog where he explains the Gadget (he wrote it, after all).
